I'm an intern!

I found the perfect internship! It was one of the ones I was most interested in. I am currently in my fourth week and am pleased to announce that I am a very happy marketing intern! The company I work for promotes products sold by companies that donate a portion or all of the proceeds to different charitable organizations. I love the fact that I'm working for a good cause. I also love that I can work from home, which makes this internship, my second job and school a lot more manageable.

A Last First!

This is my first week of my last semester of college! I'm going to try to enjoy it as much as I can because I know it's going to fly by. Woo class of 2011!

Lupus Foundation of America

Caring For a Cause: Lupus Foundation of America

Written by Marketing Intern Rose Provine

You never realize the severity of a disease or sickness until you or someone you love is directly affected. Unfortunately, this has been the case for me over the past week. My friend’s struggles have led me to the complete understanding and realization that lupus is a painful, lifelong disease.

My friend was diagnosed with lupus at age 13. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can damage any part of the body, including skin, joints, kidneys, blood cells, heart and lungs. Her case was very rare, as lupus normally strikes women of childbearing age, and more commonly ages 30-45.

I never realized the extremity of this disease until this week. I knew Charlene had struggled with this for the majority of her life, but never did see her at her worst. I found out she was in the hospital on Tuesday morning and visited her later that day. I was shocked with what I found. My fun-loving and energetic friend was not herself. She laid on the hospital bed, unable to move, speak, or even breathe on her own. It hurt me to see my friend in so much pain, and made me appreciate both her and life so much more.

There is currently no cure for lupus. However, The Lupus Foundation of America is a national nonprofit health organization dedicated to finding the causes of and cure for lupus and providing support, services and hope to all people affected by lupus. You can go to this website to learn more or to make a donation.

Martin Luther King Jr.

It is truly astonishing that one man was able to make such a difference in our world.

I have always believed that Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most inspirational men that has ever lived. When asked the question, 'If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be?', I undoubtedly answer MLK.

And I will end with a few quotes that the king himself once said,

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

"A man who won't die for something is not fit to live."

"At the center of non-violence stands the principle of love."

Snow & Tahoe

I finally went snowboarding again for the first time in years! I felt like I picked up right where I left off, but I did have a few hard falls that left me hurting later that day, the next day and the day after. Ouch!

We went to Sierra Ski Resort at Lake Tahoe. It is so beautiful there! When you get to the top of one of the lifts there is a spectacular view of the mountains and lake. It was such a perfect and relaxing day. I love getting outside and enjoying the beauty of the world's natural wonders.

Mellowed Out

I really don't need to justify spending money on myself, but I always catch myself doing just that. I have been and probably always will be frugal. This means that I usually feel guilty when I spent money on something that is not 'necessary.' This week I splurged on an hour long massage at Mellow Me Out. I definitely earned this massage! It was AMAZING! And when I convince myself that I deserve another massage (hopefully being sooner rather than later), I will go back to the same place because the day spa and staff are wonderful!

Happy New Year!

I know it's a week late, but I've just been so busy lately! I hope everyone had a fun celebration. I was stuck at work on New Year's Eve and actually celebrated the new year on my drive home. When we got off of work we hosted a small party and it ended up being so much fun!

I filled out this survey in celebration of the New Year, but more importantly, as a fun way to procrastinate. I stole this idea from my sister's blog. This was done solely as entertainment for myself, but enjoy!

1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?
Live and travel in Europe. Make great friends in a matter of weeks.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't make new year's resolutions because I never keep them. Instead, I make goals at all times of the year :)

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No I wish! (hint, hint, sister and brother-in-law!)

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, thankfully.

5. What countries did you visit?
Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom (England, Scotland & Northern Ireland) - yes, pretty much the best year ever!

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
A bachelor's degree (5 months woo!). An internship (more details coming soon!). A career that I love. A neice or nephew (hey, I can wish!). To workout more.

7. What dates from 2010 will remain etched on your memory, and why?
Summer 2010! Traveling Italy & Greece with my sisters and then interrailing with my Lisa!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Being accepted to study abroad in Ireland. Going and living there. Making the best of my adventure and loving every minute!

9. What was your biggest failure?
I can't think of anything in particular.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I got a few colds, but nothing serious.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Ryanair flights around Europe!

12. Where did most of your money go?
Bills, mainly rent. And my travels.

13. What did you get really excited about?
Every time I traveled to a new place in Europe. My sister's coming to visit. Going home to California after 10 months. Thanksgiving. Christmas.

14. What song will always remind you of 2010?
All the club music we always danced to! (Forever - Chris Brown, Run This Town - Jay Z featuring Kanye West & Rihanna, Sexy Can I - Ray J, Hard - Rihanna, Whatever You Like - T.I.)

Fireflies - Owl City
Forever Young - Youth Group
Remember When - Heathers (Disover Ireland/Northern Ireland commercials)
Cosmic Love & Dog Days Are Over - Florence and the Machine (I can't remember why, but I think of last year every time I hear them)
Falling Slowly - Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova (from Once - representing Ireland!)
Fairytale of New York - the Pogues (once again from my dear Ireland)
River flows in you - piano - Yiruma (in Paris when Lisa showed us her mad skills!)
Wavin' Flag - K'naan (the world cup song this summer)
Far From Here - The Caronas (from watching two live performances! Check them out they're amazing!)

Had to bust out the ipod for all those :)

15. Compared to this time last year, are you:

Happier or sadder? Sadder. I miss last year!
Thinner or fatter? Fatter :( I blame all the beer from last year!

In Orland with my family :)

I honestly couldn't have imagined a better year.

26. What kept you sane?
My friends ♥

27. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.
It doesn't matter where you are, whether or not you are happy is entirely dependent on your attitude.
